Home-based entrepreneurship increasing

An increasing number of Brits are choosing to forgo the UK’s clogged employment market and set up their own business from home instead, a survey by Lloyds TSB Business Insurance has revealed.

Businesses, ranging from computer consultancy to teaching, and counselling to gardening are increasingly being established from the comfort of people’s homes across the UK, Lloyds found

“The number of enterprising people opting to turn their home into their business hub is set to increase over the next year as the recession continues to bite,” said Stuart Curtis, of Lloyds TSB Insurance.

Of 1,400 adults questioned, 200 ran a home-based business, with a quarter being launched in the past year, with half of those running a business from home claiming they wanted to be their own boss.

Two-fifths said they enjoyed the flexible working hours, while others said working from home made it easier to look after their children.
